Vehicle Free Days at Cades Cove

Cades Cove is the most visited part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Do you ever wish you could explore it without the congestion of vehicles? If so, you will be happy to know that you can now enjoy the faved 11-mile loop without the vehicles! The National Park recently announced “Vehicle-Free Wednesdays” in late 2020, but it will be continuing the pilot program into the 2021 season. This gives pedestrians and cyclists the chance to really enjoy Cades Cove without worrying about being on the road and navigating through the vehicles. Vehicle Free Days at Cades Cove

The “Vehicle-Free Wednesdays” will go from May 5th through September 1st, 2021. The Park implemented this in hopes of improving visitor experience and reducing the congestion associated with their previous vehicle-free mornings that were Wednesdays and Saturdays until 10 am.

Feedback from Park Visitors

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park looked to the public to help them make some decisions about vehicle-free days. They received feedback through the mail, email, phone, and comment cards. Over 60% of the comments were positive. Overall, the full day has provided a more enjoyable experience for the thousands of cyclists and pedestrians that visit yearly.

How did the days of no vehicles go in 2020?

During the 2020 season, there were 25% more cyclists and pedestrians that took advantage of the vehicle-free Wednesdays than in 2019. The average was 1,800 people each Wednesday.
