Pigeon Forge Vacation Guide

Although I live in this area and have for most of my life, I like to play tourist for a day occasionally and enjoy the many activities there are in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Not to mention, the amazing restaurants that are off the beaten path that most vacationers do not know about. If I were visiting the Smoky Mountains in the coming months, the following would be on my itinerary.

My first stop would be to check into my Pigeon Forge Condo. I am usually traveling with my large family so I would choose to stay at Whispering Pines Condominiums. Not only are the condos spacious and comfortable, they are full of amenities like King Beds, Full Baths, Full Kitchen, WiFi, Washer/Dryer and more. However, it is not just the luxury condos that make me want to vacation there. They have a lot of amenities on the property that would be great for my nephews. Sometimes, you just do not want to spend all day traveling around town. You simply want to lounge and relax. Whispering Pines makes it easy to do just that. They offer an Indoor Pool, Indoor Hot Tub, Sauna, Fitness Room and Game Room. My nephews love the Indoor Pool area and it allows the adults to relax with a book while the kids are enjoying themselves. If you are able to vacation here in the warmer months, children will also be able to enjoy the Outdoor Pool and Lazy River too! After a day enjoying the amenities, grill yourself some delicious food to enjoy on your private balcony or even sit at the Pavilion for a picnic style dinner.

If you have something sweet on the mind, you must stop at Courthouse Donuts in downtown Sevierville. It is located right across from the Sevier County Courthouse and is simply terrific! Their donuts are unlike any other in the Sevier County area. You get to choose what kind of icing they are dipped in and then they top the donuts with anything from Oreos, Coconut and Fruity Pebbles. Then, you can drizzle it with a sauce of your choice! They are simply out of this world. Do yourself a favor and stop by there for a sweet treat. Oh, and if sweets just are not your thing, stop by for lunch. They offer up fantastic sandwiches, soups and salads. I suggest the Maui Wowi which is soft pretzel rolls toasted with swiss cheese and then stuffed with sliced honey ham, spinach and pineapple. Then they add a bit of sweet chili sauce on top of it. It is truly quite delicious.

One of my all time favorite things to do in this area is to go on a Smoky Mountain hike. You do not have to be an avid hiker to enjoy the views and history of these rolling hills. Greenbrier is, by far, my favorite place to retreat to when I need some “me” time and simply need to unwind. This is a special place to me and honestly, I go here at least once a week. Greenbrier is located off Highway 321 and is part of the National Park. There are some terrific swimming holes and large boulders for you to sun lounge on. Often, I take a book, find a big rock and enjoy being outside. It is my favorite thing to do. Now, in the summer, you will see tubers and kayakers enjoying the river. This is also where you can find the trailheads to Ramsey Cascades and Porter’s Creek. Porter’s Creek is a favorite trail of mine this time of year. There are numerous wildflowers growing along this trail in the Spring and if you stick with the hike, you will come to a waterfall and a footbridge that is pretty incredible as well.

The Wild Plum Tea Room

After a day in Greenbrier, I like to enjoy one of the restaurants along the Gatlinburg Craft Trail. The Wild Plum Tea Room is excellent. It has even been written about in magazines and all the food is homemade. It is sat in a rustic mountain setting and they offer sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads, seafood and vegetarian meals. Be sure to stop by this Austrian Style Tea House on your next Pigeon Forge Vacation. Another fantastic place to stop for some good food is the Fox and Parrot British Pub. It is true authentic pub fare and they offer food you will not find anywhere else in this area. Be sure to have their Bread Pudding for dessert.

Now that your stomach is full, hop on over to Ripley’s Aquarium. I know that a lot of folks have been to numerous aquariums throughout the country, but the Gatlinburg Ripley’s Aquarium was recently voted #1 in the ENTIRE country! People like to return year after year to this attraction and Ripley’s is constantly changing exhibits and adding new adventures for their guests to enjoy. If you are vacationing with us at Whispering Pines, you also receive a free adult admission to the aquarium and then you can purchase additional tickets at a hefty discount at the front office with our Entertainment Rewards Pass.

Another fun adventure is Dolly Parton’s Dollywood. Beginning on April 10th, they have enra joining them to entertain all their guests. If you watch America’s Got Talent, you may have seen them in 2015. They are a Tokyo based dance company and their show is mesmerizing. They feature light and video fusion, dance and insane routines that will keep everyone entertained. People around the world love them and you get a chance to watch them, at Dollywood, April 10th-22nd. Dollywood also offers a lot of rides for people of all ages and you can purchase your Dollywood Tickets at Whispering Pines at a discounted price as well.

Mentioning Dolly Parton, her new Pigeon Forge dinner show will open on April 21st. This show will be where the Lumberjack Adventure previously was and will tell the story of Dolly’s Family. The new show will feature acts, music and characters that tell a story of the Owens and Partons battling for the Pigeon Forge mill. As the Smoky Mountain Adventures website states, it unfolds the story of a family that shaped the future of the Great Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee. There is a lot of excitement surrounding this new show and we cannot wait to see it and try their country cooking. Speaking of their cooking, the show will offer: Grandma’s Noodle Salad, Dorothy Jo’s Homemade Biscuit, Avie Lee’s Fried Chicken, Pulled Pork Scalded and Cooked over at Grandpa Jake’s, Cabin Taters out of John Henry’s Garden, Buttery Corn on the Cob picked by Uncle Billy and Aunt Martha’s Southern Peach Pie. Sounds good, does it not?!

Pigeon Forge is such a special place in many people’s hearts including the locals. The front desk staff is always available to give suggestions on the best lunch, must see attractions and the best drives or hikes to enjoy in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Join us in 2017 and make some memories with your family and friends in one of the top destinations in the country for a getaway.
